Pressure-Based Altitude Gauges

Pressure-based altitude gauges, also known as barometric altimeters, use the atmospheric pressure which decreases with altitude to calculate altitude. These devices generally rely on the International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) model for accuracy. A standard pressure at sea level is 1013.25 hPa, and a typical rate of pressure decrease is approximately 12 hPa per 100 meters of altitude.

GPS-Based Altitude Gauges

GPS-based altitude gauges use signals from a network of satellites to triangulate the device's position in three-dimensional space. Accuracy depends on the number of satellites visible to the receiver and the quality of the received signals. They can achieve typical accuracies of within 15 meters under ideal conditions.

Radar Altimeters

Radar altimeters emit radio waves toward the ground and measure the time it takes for the waves to return. The altitude is calculated based on the speed of radio waves (approximately 299,792,458 meters/second) and the measured return time. Radar altimeters are exceptionally accurate at low altitudes, often used for landing aircraft with accuracy up to 0.5 meters.
